We are proud of our history
The CKNW Orphans’ Fund grew out of the commitment of an emerging radio station to become a part of the community in which it was established.
CKNW Radio began broadcasting in 1944, and that December the station made the season a little brighter by purchasing gifts for the children residing in a local orphanage, the Loyal Protestant Home.Year after year CKNW continued the tradition thanks to the generous support of their listeners.
It is from those humble beginnings that the CKNW Orphans’ Fund grew.
Although the orphanage eventually closed its doors, the CKNW Orphans’ Fund lived on and today supports children who have special needs.
What is our mission?
The CKNW Orphans’ Fund is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children living with physical, mental, and social challenges living in B.C. communities.
Where does our funding come from?
Our major annual fundraiser takes place at the beginning of December each year. This 14 hour live radiothon is supported by CKNW (AM980) listeners, clients and leaders in our community. Throughout the year we partner with many business organizations who raise funds on our behalf through various events.
CKNW (AM980), a division of Corus Entertainment, continues to support promotional and marketing services for the CKNW Orphans’ Fund.
Where does our funding go?
For over seventy years the CKNW Orphans’ Fund has granted millions of dollars to thousands of children with special needs and special needs organizations. Through the generosity of our donors we have been able to assist by providing grants for requests such as specialized medical equipment, therapies, and programs for at-risk youth.
We also help with tuition for students with special needs to attend schools that can provide integrated educational and clinical programs.
Each June we host over 3,000 students with special needs at our annual Picnic at Playland.
Many B.C. colleges and universities continue to grant bursaries to students through our Erm Fiorillo-Hal Davis CKNW Orphans’ Fund Endowment.
