The CKNW Orphans’ Fund Board of Directors is comprised of a diverse group of people deeply committed to sustaining the services that we provide. All of our board members are volunteers and giving of their time and talents for a great cause.
Wally Oppal - Chairman of the Board
Senior Counsel – Boughton Law
Wally is an experienced counsel and strategic advisor. His practice focuses on alternative and traditional dispute resolution as well as Aboriginal law.
After graduation from the University of British Columbia Law School, Wally went into private practice for a number of years. During this time he was appointed as a Special Prosecutor on many high profile criminal and commercial cases.
In 2005, he was appointed as Attorney General of British Columbia and served as Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism until 2009. Wally was involved in many significant reforms of the justice system, including the establishment of Canada’s first community court to deal with chronic offenders, developing new Rules of Court in order to promote quicker resolution of disputes and developing new initiatives in dealing with violence against women.
A lifetime resident of British Columbia, Wally has dedicated his entire working life to the pursuit of social justice and community safety. His landmark report on policing in British Columbia led to many policing reforms after its publication in 1994. Wally’s service to the public of this province, most recently as Commissioner of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry, is of special significance.
Lara Dauphinee - Vice-Chair
Managing Director – Fiore Group
Ms. Dauphinee graduated from the University of Western Ontario. In 2001, she was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to Premier Campbell and held that role until 2011. In 2011, Ms. Dauphinee joined Frank Giustra and Fiore Financial Corporation, and now holds the title of Managing Director, the Fiore Group. Ms. Dauphinee leads a broad range of responsibilities, from managing a number of investments, to growing and expanding start-ups. She also serves as a Director of the Vancouver Board of Trade, Pure Freedom YYOGA Wellness Inc., Alter Eco Americas Inc., The Great Ontario Food Company, CKNW Orphan’s Fund, Pacific Autism Family Centre Building Committee, Telus Science World Chairman’s Committee, CARE Canada I am Powerful Council, the Radcliffe Foundation and various other philanthropic committees.
Chris Tsoromocos - Treasurer
Managing Director at Maxam Capital Corp
Mr. Tsoromocos has an extensive 15 year background in private equity and public market investing. Prior to joining Maxam Capital Corp., Mr. Tsoromocos was a senior executive at Stern Partners, a well-established private equity firm with 18 portfolio companies based in North America that collectively generated $2 billion in sales and employed 7,000 individuals. Mr. Tsoromocos was actively involved in a wide range of investment activities for Stern Partners, including the acquisition and oversight of a number of the group’s portfolio companies as well as management of both private and public investments.
Mr. Tsoromocos has also worked for leading investment banks including CIBC World Markets and RBC Capital Markets in Canada and Citigroup and Royal Bank of Scotland in the United Kingdom where he worked with leading public companies and private equity firms. Mr. Tsoromocos has a broad range of investing and advisory experience including acquisitions, divestitures and equity and debt financings across a variety of industries including real estate. Mr. Tsoromocos also serves on numerous boards and is an active supporter of not-for-profit and community initiatives.
Mr. Tsoromocos received an MBA (Honors) from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Commerce from the Sauder School of Business and holds a Chartered Accountant designation.
Sandra Garossino - Secretary
CEO – Intellex Legal Management
Born in Vancouver, Sandy was raised in small-town Alberta before returning to Vancouver to attend university. She obtained a BA from SFU and an LLB from UBC. She practiced law as a Crown prosecutor for a number of years, with special emphasis on youth crime and gangs.
Garossino is founder and CEO of Intellex Legal Project Management Inc., a recent startup company that employs technology innovations and contracted services to drive down legal costs. Garossino sits on the SFU India Advisory Council and has ties to UBC’s Asia strategy through her support for the Institute for Asian Research, the Advisory Council of the Indian Summer Festival of Arts and Ideas, the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration, and sits on the Patrons Circle of the Vancouver International Writers Festival. She and her husband also support a school in India.
Past board memberships include the Vancouver International Writers Festival, the Public Dreams Society (which produces Illuminares and the Parade of Lost Souls), the Alliance for Arts and Culture, and the Vancouver Biennale, which Garossino co-chaired. She chaired the Alliance for Arts’ Advocacy Task Force, and served as a volunteer consultant for the BC Association for Charitable Gaming, which represents the interests of thousands of BC charities and non-profits affected by provincial gaming grant policy.
Garossino’s long record of service to the charitable and non-profit community led her to co-found the Vancouver Not Vegas Coalition, successfully opposing the expansion of Edgewater Casino on the BC Place site.

Sally Dennis is an experienced lawyer in the areas of business succession and estate planning, including planned giving. Born and raised in Wales, Sally moved to Vancouver in 1980. After obtaining law degrees from Oxford, UBC and the University of Victoria, she practised at a major Canadian national law firm for a number of years before stints in law firm management and as general counsel at Intrawest. She returned to private practice in 2008. She has three children, now in their 20s, and lives in Deep Cove. She loves gardening and cooking and boasts a formidable library of cookbooks. She is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (and is on the executive of its Vancouver branch) and holds a certificate in family enterprise advising from the UBC Sauder School of Business.
Anchor – Global BC
Chris Gailus is a Canadian television news anchor who is currently the host of Global BC’s News Hour. With more than 25 years of experience in broadcast journalism, Gailus is recipient of many prestigious awards like Emmy Award for Best Single Morning News Program, multiple Canadian Screen Awards for Best Newscast Large, and his most recent Canadian Screen Award for Best Local News Anchor in 2015. Outside the newsroom, Gailus supports many non-profit organizations like BC Children’s Hospital, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Room to Read, and organizations that support research and treatment for Diabetes and Arthritis.
Senior Vice President – Angus Reid Global
A public policy analyst, Shachi Kurl directs research, communications, partner development and operations at the Angus Reid Institute. She brings 15 years of experience to her role, spending the first part of her career as political reporter and as a representative for the small business community. Shachi is a recipient of the prestigious Jack Webster award for Best TV Reporting. A frequent columnist and commentator, she holds a degree in Journalism and Political Science from Carleton University in Ottawa and serves on the boards of the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation and the CKNW Orphans’ Fund.
Senior Program Director – Corus Entertainment Vancouver
Currently the Manager of Talk and Talent for Corus Entertainment in Vancouver and Sr. Program Director of CKNW, Larry Gifford is a graduate of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio and has been working in broadcasting for over 25 years. After a decade of reporting and anchoring for news and sports outlets across America, Larry became a successful program director leading major stations including KIRO-FM in Seattle, KSPN-AM in Los Angeles and the ESPN Radio Network in Bristol, Connecticut. He is also the owner of Larry Gifford Media, where he serves as an international radio consultant and talent coach. Over the years, Larry has worked with and helped to raise millions of dollars through radio events for many great organizations including CKNW’s Orphan’s Fund, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The V Foundation for Cancer Research, and Treehouse benefiting Foster Kids in Washington State. In 2012, through his leadership, KIRO Radio won the National Association of Broadcaster’s Crystal Award for the station’s year-round dedication to community service.
General Manager – Corus Entertainment Vancouver
Currently the General Manager at Corus Entertainment, Brad Phillips is an extremely experienced individual in the radio and television broadcasting industry. Having been a part of it for over 25 years, Phillips has held numerous titles such as Program Director at Moffat Communications, Vice President and General Manager of Chum Radio & Television and Vice President of BC Operations at Astral Media. Phillips is also currently serving as the President of the British Columbia Association of Broadcasters.
President – Fairborne Homes
As the President of Fairborne Homes, Christopher Philips is extremely knowledgeable about the Vancouver residential real estate market. He is extremely passionate about delivering more than the average homebuilder, but a Fairborne Residence with vibrant living spaces within a pleasant community. Over the years, Philips has been awarded winner of the Urban Development Institute’s Award for Excellence in Urban Development, where Fairborne has created some of the Lower Mainland’s most memorable homes.
Senior Manager – Commercial Card Account Management, Global Transaction Banking
Angela Racette is Senior Principal – Pacific at Xerox Global Services, where she is responsible for strategy development in support of new client partnerships.
Born in Vernon and a long-time Greater Vancouver-area resident, Angela has spent almost two decades building a professional business development career, volunteering with several key organizations and raising a healthy family.
Key career milestones include developing the Corporate & Institutional Sales Program at Chapters/Chapters Online, building the Spend & Payment Solutions portfolio at BMO across public sector in British Columbia and more recently growing Managed Services partnerships with Xerox Canada.
Volunteer activity has included fundraising for partisan organizations, hands-on support of several major sporting events such as World Police & Fire Games, Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Olympics, the PGA’s Greater Vancouver Open/Canadian Open (several times) and local support for Canadian Blood Services, Family Education & Support Centre and Salvation Army.
Angela is an avid golfer and enthusiastic long-time supporter of the BC Lions as a season ticket-holder and active Waterboy.
Director of Sales – Corus Radio Vancouver
Mike started his career as a golf professional at the Vancouver Golf Club in 1994. He went from teaching executives how to golf to radio sales in 1999 and has not looked back. He’s held many leadership positions within Corus and currently is the Director of Sales Corus Vancouver, which includes leading a team to market leading growth with some of the top radio stations in the city (CKNW, ROCK101, CFOX and AM730). Last year, Mike was honoured by Corus with a Samurai Award for his work contributing to the innovation of Sponsorship sales and nitration on CKNW.
For the past 16 years, Mike and his team have worked to support the CKNW Orphan’s Fund during Pledge Day, The Picnic, and Pink Shirt Day. He feels privileged to have the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful charity for so many years and to now have the opportunity to be a part of the Board of Directors.
When Mike is not involved in the world of sales, he can be found, obviously, golfing or with his family.
